Arbor Acres
My photo assignment explained this project so well, I figured I would just copy and paste:
“The town of Glastonbury owns the former Arbor Acres Farm, where modern chicken was invented. The town is demolishing the buildings to make more open space. Story is about this, and about the history of the farm and its owner, Henry Saglio, a poultry giant who died in 2003. Two-thirds of all chickens eaten in the USA were descended from Arbor Acres birds. No activity. We are looking for moody and evocative pictures of the old place — including a couple of large chicken coop buildings.”
Rube and Nick
My EAW story was to follow this man, Rube, who owns the oldest farm in Parksville, the little town our Blue Team was documenting. Parksville is a community in transition that is being bypassed by a major interstate project that is tearing up a lot of the land in the town and diverting traffic away from their already dying businesses. Rube is a native of the town of Liberty; Parksville is one of four or five of Liberty’s hamlets. Rube used to be the mayor of Liberty and now owns several of the farms in the area and takes it upon himself to do odd jobs and take care of people in the community who have no one else, like his neighbor Nick, pictured here, a man in his nineties with severe Alzheimers. His wife and daughter are more or less ‘city girls’ but he would prefer to live out the rest of his life in Parksville, working on his hobby farm and checking in on the neighbors that depend on him most. I’m going through these pictures slowly, as I catch up on rest from the past couple weeks and work on getting stuff all set in my new apartment in Hartford.
Ice Dancing with the stars
A couple of local ice dancing Olympians have started a program for inner-city kids in Hartford. It lasts the whole school year and these guys actually know the kids’ names unlike a lot of the publicity ‘Athletes Giving Back’ stories I’ve covered. Courant Slideshow

I had a religious experience this weekend. Here’s an image from a story I worked on – more info and pictures to come.
