Portrait day: shy golf kids

with one comment

These kids were so shy- Ken is 14 and Saki is 13, and they are local golf phenoms. It was funny to me that they can’t say two words, but their golf swing is so hard and fast that you swear it could decapitate you with one swipe :) This was the end of a long portrait day for me Sunday!

(monsoon clouds!)

Too much flash? Looking at them now, they look a little hot. Any suggestions? For these, it was so bright I had to shoot at f14, so I didn’t use any light modifiers. It would be nice to have a softbox or umbrella, but I think I would need at least two strobes inside to overpower the sun. Ideas are always welcome!

Portrait day: Singers

with 4 comments

The challenge: light 10 totally different people in different ways to make an appealing slideshow about this singing competition in Scottsdale. They all sing in the same area, so the goal was to really work every angle to change it up. The catch: take their 2-minute song window to do it in. This is most of them- tell me what you think.

Emcee, CC Jones

The competition is at The Estate House in Scottsdale, Tuesday nights starting mid-July. Come see the singers and have a martini with me!

A couple different ones I didn’t think needed separate posts…

Story about ‘pedicabs’-those rickshaw-looking things that take people from their cars to events:
Really underexposed picture from the Death Cab concert… just liked it.

Portrait of a guy who runs his Ford Ranger EV-2 (electric truck) off of solar panels on his roof… tricky lighting! One flash snooted to his face, one on the ground to highlight the bumper sticker and plates, all in 112 degree weather :) Kind of a messy background, but when shooting at f14…
View of brushfire smoke over Phoenix from the office the other day…

Catchin’ up: Daily assignments!

with 2 comments

I have consciously been trying to shoot more verticals, because I have noticed they have fallen to the wayside with my lazy hand not wanting to turn the camera on its side. What better assignment to do it on, than one that revolves around kids shooting rockets into the air…

This is a summer day camp for kids at Challenger Space Center in Peoria. I think I like the second one the best. The verticals, they all have the same kind of feel to them- now I just need to vary up my compositions.
