Photo stories, or lack therof

I was working on this story about Amanda and Natalie, five-year-old twin sisters living in Surprise who were born healthy, but disabled by vaccinations they received at 18 months old. The story was killed by the editor of the writer who was initially assigned to the story, when it was revealed that the girls’ Polish family had yet to set up a proper non-profit for people to donate for the girls.

So here are the images from the time I spent with them. It makes me feel a little better to at least get them on the blog, despite knowing they probably won’t be published anywhere else.

The family was very nice but I understand why the story can’t run. Live and learn.

Five-year-old birthday party for the girls; Natalie, at top does not speak or walk, and her vision is severely impaired, while Amanda, below, is quite active but can not talk.

Amanda is very active and curious, always exploring her world, but gets frustrated easily.

Natalie rocks back and forth on the floor while home, in between therapies. She makes her way toward the window because she likes the light and the cool feeling of the family’s tile floor.

“We wouldn’t do it,” their father says of Natalie and the myriad types of therapies the girls attend. “if she wasn’t like this.”
