Da Swamp

with 3 comments

For all of my desert friends who have never seen a swamp, this one’s for you.

Wednesday night, I went out to Lake Martin near Breaux Bridge to illustrate a story we were doing on some bike trails that were going to be built in the future, and just needed some pretty landscape shots. I got there early to do some walking and try to spot a gator. Near sunset, I walked out to the main drag of the lake, where you can walk out on an embankment and get a clear shot of the sunset behind the trees.

The only downside to shooting in such a pretty location was that one of the local photo clubs came to take in the sunset as well. No sooner had I walked out on the embankment, to look back and see twenty people with cameras on tripods lined up behind me. Deadline’s approaching, and the sun just isn’t setting fast enough. I knew I was just about the get the phone call asking me where my pictures were and I knew my internet didn’t work out there.

So I cut out of there before the light got really, really sweet. I couldn’t help myself though and got back out of the car a half a mile down the road around the lake to try and get a couple with the fiery sky, but the trees just weren’t as well positioned as they were on the embankment. I got my photos in just before deadline, and what did they do? Held the story for the next day.

So I can’t say I’m super proud of these, but at least they’re not taken in an elementary, middle or high school :)

Pre-Kindergarten Graduation

with one comment

There is nothing better than three-year-olds in mortarboards and white gowns. Space was really cramped in the room, and I got some funny faces of the kids that didn’t run, so I figured I would share them here.

Failing school

with one comment

Louisiana is a state of failing schools. Here is some wild art from one supposedly failing school in Lafayette – a school that has improved its standardized test scores despite most of the kids coming from impoverished families and an extremely high number of children with physical and mental disabilities. They have a language immersion program that starts kids learning spanish, french and now chinese in elementary grades, which is great in a city where most of the street signs are in french and many people speak it.

Angola Prison Rodeo

with 5 comments

These are way overdue to be posted. Angola is a prison complex community north of Baton Rouge. They hold a rodeo a couple times a year featuring the prisoners. We went on a great day because it had been pouring for the last two days and it was extremely muddy. It was my second rodeo I had ever shot, so I can’t say I got the best action shots, but I really tried.
They also have arts and crafts for sale, which are incredible. The way I understand it is, the better behavior you have, the more access you have to tools in their workshop. The craftsmanship is amazing and I think, a great way to spend time if you’re locked up for life like these guys. Let’s just say they’re not in there for petty theft or anything – Angola is mostly for lifers.

…A new car!!!

with one comment

My assignment this morning was to photograph a car giveaway for a reading contest at one of the local high schools. I was happy to see this girl win, she was very genuine and didn’t have her license yet, but was just waiting for a car to get one. All in all a good graduation present for her.
