San Diego Trip

with one comment

So, I would have had these posted Tuesday, but we didn’t have internet access in our room, and I didn’t feel like lugging my computer to the coffee shop down the road because it would interfere with my beeline for the beach.

Here are the photos from the first day of our 4-day, 3-night stay on Pacific Beach. I just got home a little while ago and it was lovely and relaxing. We spent 99% of our time physically on the beach, which was just 1% shy of our goal.

I am so excited to start working again. These last few weeks of relaxing has been lovely, but I am finally over the burnt-outedness of the end of school and ready to shoot.

More beach photos coming.

Deanna on the dunes, driving out.

Melia and Herb making obscene hand puppets.

First day.

Two steps from the hotel.

Frame by frame, I didn’t know which one of these I liked more. I have been trying the out-of focus thing, and I kinda like it.

This one’s ok. I liked the pastels, I don’t know. Outside the liquor store.

Holga Scans

with 2 comments

More coming soon, but my film scanner is acting up and making the process really, really slow. These are pictures from my Holga shot on 35 mm film, which will be cool when I can get them to scan properly.

Argh! If anyone knows why my hpscanjet 5500c stops midway through scanning, or has any ideas on how to fix it, let me know! Or, if you have a negative scanner, that would be great too. Maybe I will sneak in to the art school and see if they say anything.

I have some shots way cooler than these that I can’t get to scan :(

Memorial Day Event

with 2 comments

It’s nice to get some work, aside from all of this intense relaxing I have been doing… Life is hard just spending time with friends and family, swimming with Amber and just generally sleeping in.

Darryl called me with an assignment this morning, so here is a few shots from a Memorial Day celebration at Banner Baywood Medical Center in Mesa. If you’re wondering why it’s not being held on Monday, it’s because they like to do these things early to get good press.

Couldn’t choose whether I liked the eyes or no eyes. Hmm.

Reflections, kinda fun. Not super readable, but I sent it in anyway.

ROAD1 Cycling Class

Take a look at the shadows and guess what time I got out there Saturday… let me tell you it was just a few hours after I went to bed the night before… and an hour before the 5k previous post. These people are neurotic.

I thought this one was a pretty successful pan, but I wish I would have slowed the shutter even a more; without looking at the exif data I think it was about 1/25th… I would have liked a little more blur though.

Girls on the Run 5K

leave a comment »

This was an assignment I shot for the Trib this weekend. It was a 5k around Kiwanis park, and we were focusing on girls from a specific elementary school… running events are always fun because everyone is so freakin’ happy.

There were also people doing Tai Chi on the hill…

And people who weren’t so happy…

But all in all, it was a nice day, I guess. It was nice to get some work at least, in the midst of all of this vacation time.

Andrew Jackson Jihad Portrait

with one comment

Sean and Ben from local folk-punk spectacle Andrew Jackson Jihad asked me to shoot a portrait of them for valley concert calendar The Phoenix Agenda. The publication is still pretty new and I hadn’t heard of it or saw it, but they wanted straight 11×17 vertical with layout space at the top, and the guys don’t like posing.

Since they met while working at the Willow House making coffee, I figured it would be fitting to have them drinking coffee in their place of choice, Sean’s apartment at The Laird. They are super nice and most comfortable in front of the camera when they can just bullshit with one another and smoke cigarettes, so that’s what they did.

Little did I know, this mural was on May’s cover. Good thing its not my favorite one.

And just for fun;

This one’s a little soft :(

Sam Gavin’s Party

with 2 comments

Sam Gavin’s futuristic-themed pre-graduation party… neon lights and a bright night sky made for an interesting backdrop.

Kickball

leave a comment »

Kickball in the dark sandlot of Coronado Park was a lot of fun. Thanks to Hillary, Amethyst, Sarah, Marty and Amber for inviting us along… and thanks to the overly aggressive/physically competitive Holgas boys for providing endless entertainment and a few Blue Moons. It was just an all-around good night.

It makes me want to take some pocket wizards out there, or even better yet, just big cheap flashlights. I love this weather; I am dreading it getting hot.

Those ‘other’ photos of Aaron Brown

leave a comment »

So, if you saw the previous post about my portrait of Aaron Brown going out on the AP wire in a press release, this isn’t the same photo. I just liked these better. He didn’t.

This was his personality. Slow talking and careful, but with kind of a sarcastic spark that lit up at times.

Natalie at MacAlpine’s

leave a comment »

My sister, Mariel, brought her daughter Natalie down last week to see the blockbuster event “Sesame Street: LIVE!!!”. Of course, we went for ice cream beforehand. For those of you who don’t know, Amelia and a lot of other fine people work at MacAlpine’s Soda Fountain, a restaurant and antique shop on Seventh Street straight outta 1928.

cute kid + strawberry ice cream + vintage soda fountain = ‘so much beauty it could make you cry’
